Keith L. Blauer, MD Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist/Infertility Specialist

Dr. Keith L. Blauer is a board certified infertility specialist reproductive endocrinologist located in Salt Lake City, UT.  He was previously the Infertility Medical Director, Chief Executive Officer and President of Genetics & IVF Institute (GIVF) in Fairfax, Virginia and a practicing fertility doctor. GIVF is one of the largest fully integrated providers of infertility and genetics services in the world.

After spending 21 years east of the Mississippi River, he was excited to return to the intermountain region and become more involved in direct patient care, which he states is his “true love”.  Dr Blauer was raised in the farming community of Burley Idaho and graduated from Burley High School in 1973.  He is thrilled to be a practicing infertility specialist in Sandy Utah, a bedroom community of Salt Lake City.

He served as a missionary for the LDS church in the Japan Fukuoka Mission from 1974-1976. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Zoology at Brigham Young University in 1979 and then received a Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Air Force to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.  He was elected to AOA (Medical Honor Society) prior to graduation from the University of Washington in 1983.

Dr. Blauer completed a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Keesler USAF Medical Center in Biloxi Mississippi prior to his fertility doctor training. He completed his infertility specialist, reproductive endocrinology Fellowship subspecialty training at the Combined Federal Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

During his fertility specialist fellowship he was actively involved in organized medicine and was the Armed Forces Junior Fellow District Chairman of the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists (ACOG).  He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. 

From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Blauer was the fertility doctor who directed the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility service at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and established the first affiliated in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) program in the Department of Defense. The first patients that participated in both the IVF program and the GIFT program conceived. 

Upon completion of his military commitments, Dr Blauer joined Reproductive Endocrinology Associates and the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina.  He completed his MBA in 1996 with a certificate in Healthcare Administration from Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. James S. Heiner, MD Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist/Infertility Specialist

Dr James S. Heiner, Board Certified Infertility Specialist, Reproductive Endocrinologist is the founder of the Reproductive Care Center, the first private practice infertility and IVF clinic in the state of Utah also serving patients from Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.  The center opened in 1996, followed by the IVF Utah Infertility Specialistservice which began in April 1997.   The first five IVF patients conceived and the center has had excellent pregnancy success rates ever since.  Dr Heiner’s goal is to deliver the highest quality fertility care, employing a very caring and competent staff and the latest available techniques and technologies. 

Dr Heiner was born in Salt Lake City, Utah; he has also lived in Little Rock, Arkansas; Montreal, Canada; Southern California; Provo, Utah; Paris, France ( 2 years as a missionary); and Galveston, Texas. 

He majored in Microbiology at BYU and studied Biochemistry at the University of Utah before earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) in 1985.  He then completed a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB.  During this time he served as chief administrative resident and was honored with the “Good as Gold” award for superior patient care. 

Dr. Heiner then completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Centers in Los Angeles completing the program in 1991.  Dr Heiner served as a full time faculty member at UCLA until 1996.  While there he served as the acting director of the Fellowship Program in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and was also the director of the fertility clinic and endoscopy surgical services for the Department of OB/GYN at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. 

Dr Heiner then moved to his home town of Salt Lake City Utah to establish the first private IVF practice in the state and he was the first board certified infertility specialist in Utah.  Dr Heiner is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Harry Hatasaka, MD Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist/Infertility Specialist

Reproductive Care Center is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Harry Hatasaka to our medical staff. Dr. Hatasaka will join Dr. James S. Heiner and Dr. Keith L. Blauer in providing excellent care to married couples in need of advanced reproductive technology (ART).

Dr. Hatasaka has an excellent reputation as a board certified reproductive endocrinologist and served as the medical director of the IVF program at the University of Utah from 1994 until 2009.

Born in Honolulu Dr Hatasaka grew up in Palo Alto, California. After graduating from Stanford University in 1979 with a B.S. in biology, in 1979 and he enrolled in medical school at the Medical College of Virginia.  While in Virginia the first successful in vitro fertilization procedure in the United States was performed by a husband and wife team (Howard and Georgeanna Jones in 1981).  Dr. Hatasaka’s career-long interest in reproductive medicine began when he visited the couple in Norfolk Virginia soon after the first United States IVF baby was born.

Dr. Hatasaka completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University in obstetrics and gynecology where he began assisting in the performance of in vitro fertilization procedures by 1984.  He stayed to join the faculty at Case Western Reserve as a general obstetrician gynecologist and was fortunate to begin three total years of subspecialty fellowship training a year later with Dr. Leon Speroff, one of the icons of reproductive medicine.  The final two years of Dr. Hatasaka’s fellowship training were completed at Northwestern University in Chicago.

In 1991, Dr. Hatasaka joined the faculty at the University of Utah in the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility in 1991.  He became the interim Medical Director of the Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine in 1994 and assumed the Medical Directorship in 1997.  While at the University of Utah, Dr. Hatasaka published a number of scientific papers and chapters in the field of reproductive medicine with a focus on anatomical anomalies of the reproductive tract involved in infertility.  Clinically he maintained an active infertility practice with an interest and emphasis on the efficient diagnosis of infertility problems and the most cost-effective treatment plans to employ.  He also has a special interest in caring for women affected by polycystic ovary syndrome. Brad Swelstad, MD Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist/Infertility Specialist

Donor Egg SpecialistReproductive Care Center is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Brad B. Swelstad to our medical staff. Dr. Swelstad will join Dr. James S. Heiner,  Dr. Keith L. Blauer, and Dr. Harry H. Hatasaka in providing excellent care to married couples in need of advanced reproductive technology (ART).

Dr. Brad B. Swelstad joins us after finishing fellowship training in reproductive medicine from Johns Hopkins University.  Dr. Swelstad specializes in all aspects of fertility care and has authored several research articles involving the use of stem cell therapies for treatment of infertility. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1997 with an Honors  B.S. degree in zoology.

After finishing his doctorate of medicine from Saint George’s University, he completed his internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at LSU in New Orleans and residency at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Currently, Dr. Swelstad is also an adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins.

Dr Swelstad was invited to be a presenter at the National American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) the internationally recognized leader for multidisciplinary information, education, advocacy and standards in the field of reproductive medicine in October of 2011.

He is a native of Wisconsin. He and his wife are glad to be in Utah to enjoy the outdoor recreation.
